About opal
Opal’s play of kaleidoscopic colours is unlike any other gem, its dramatic play of colours has inspired writers to compare it to fireworks, galaxies, and volcanoes. Bedouins even believed opal held lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms.
With a hardness of 5 to 6,5 on the Mohs scale opal is softer than most gem-quality stones. To prevent scratches store opal jewellery by itself.
The name opal is believed to have originated in India; in Sanskrit it was called Upala, meaning ‘Precious stone’. The gem is thought to be a symbol of hope, purity, and truth. Because opal can show all colours, it was believed to be the most precious and powerful of all gems.
The gem is the birthstone for October and has a reputation for protecting one’s health.
