The gem was named tanzanite by Tiffany & Co to honour its sole origin country; Tanzania.
Along with Zircon, the gem is the birthstone for December and symbolizes confidence, individuality, and prosperity.
Found in just one place on earth, the hills of Merelani in Tanzania, Tanzanite is a relatively recent discovery (1967).
