Once mainly described as an emerald alternative, chrome diopside is increasingly being promoted as a gem in its own right. Two things set Chrome Diopside apart – its color and its clarity. With a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale; diopside is a more delicate gem but perfect for use in necklaces and earrings.

The stone gets its name from the Greek words ‘dis’ and ‘opse’, meaning ‘two faced’ in reference to there being two different ways of orientating the gem before it is cut.

Gem-quality chrome diopside is mined primarily in eastern Siberia.
